Mesothelioma Symptoms Cell News

Mesothelioma is a rare but deadly lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Though the symptoms of many cancers are easily identifiable, mesothelioma symptoms www.MesotheliomaSymptoms.com are subtle and can be latent for 20-50 years after initial exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma life expectancy http is relatively short, usually only a few months after diagnosis. For unknown reasons, mesothelioma patients display high chemotherapeutic resistance. Because of this, it is hypothesized that cancer stem cells are likely to persist in malignant pleural mesothelioma tumors, leading to that resistance and post-chemotherapy relapses.

Pharyngeal Cancer

Pharyngeal Cancer www.mesorc.com The term pharyngeal disease refers to any disease of the throat (pharynx). The throat is part of both the respiratory system and the digestive system, delivering life-giving oxygen and life-sustaining nourishment to the body. How Asbestos Affects the Pharynx When tiny asbestos fibers are inhaled or swallowed, they may become permanently lodged in the soft tissues of the throat. The body's immune system recognizes the fibers as foreign bodies, kicking defenses into high gear and resulting in inflammation and scarring. Because asbestos fibers break down so slowly, they can remain in the body for many years, creating an ideal environment for infection and disease to develop. In the worst case, asbestos fibers in the throat can lead to cancer of the pharynx. Pharyngeal cancer typically grows silently, showing no symptoms until the disease has reached advanced stages. Symptoms of Asbestos-Related Pharyngeal Disease The symptoms of pharyngeal cancer include: * Sore throat * Coughing * Trouble swallowing; a feeling of a "lump" in the throat * Breathlessness * Change in voice * Pain in the ear * Infection If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and have a history of exposure to asbestos, you may wish to talk to your doctor. Diagnosis and Treatment for Asbestos-Related Pharyngeal Disease There are no specific tests for cancer of the pharynx. Pericardial Mesothelioma

Pericardial mesothelioma is a rare form of mesothelioma that accounts for roughly 5% of all mesothelioma cases. Pericardial mesothelioma is a cancer that grows on the lining of the heart. The lining of the heart is extremely important because it plays an important role in protecting the heart from damage and so pericardial mesothelioma is an extremely serious condition. Pericardial mesothelioma becomes a terminal illness if not treated aggressively in its early stages.

Like all other forms of mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma is caused by inhalation of asbestos dust and fibres. Once inhaled, asbestos fibres become lodged in the lungs. From the lungs, the fibres can either pass into the lymphatic system and then be transported to the lining of the lungs or they can gradually move across to the lining of the heart over a long period of time. Over a long period of time, asbestos fibres can accumulate on the lining of the heart and this is when pericardial mesothelioma becomes a likelihood. Due to the fact that asbestos is still present in many public buildings, the possibility of pericardial mesothelioma is a reality for everyone, although for most, very unlikely.

Those with the highest chance of having mesothelioma are those who have been in constant contact with mesothelioma for a length of time as short as a few months. These are people like construction workers and asbestos manufacturers. Those who are in contact with people who are constantly exposed to asbestos are also at risk due to the fact that asbestos fibres can stick to clothes and hair and so can be carried around.

Presently, cases of mesothelioma are increasing including pericardial mesothelioma. Elderly men who are approaching 60 - 70 years of age are just starting to suffer from pericardial mesothelioma due to its long latency period (amount of time the symptoms take to show) of 30 - 50 years. They are suffering because this was the generation who worked with asbestos and amongst asbestos when asbestos was an extremely popular building material in the 1950s - 1970s. These men are now lodging multi-million dollar lawsuits against the companies who exposed them to the dangers of asbestos.

Pericardial mesothelioma has a number of symptoms but these only start to take effect in the cancer's latest stages when it is almost fully matured and developed. These symptoms include persistent coughing, shortness of breath, chest pains and palpitations. Other symptoms typical of all types of mesothelioma include loss of appetite, nausea and weight loss. What often makes pericardial mesothelioma so difficult to treat is that its symptoms are typical of many other more common diseases such as pneumonia. To be treated effectively, pericardial mesothelioma needs to be treated aggressively in its early stages and so many patients' treatments are given too late because of a delay in diagnosis.

Treatments for pericardial mesothelioma are very limited and as yet, success rates for curing pericardial mesothelioma are very low. The chances of a patient's survival depend largely on how early the cancer is treated and how aggressively. Treatment methods include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, dual therapy and surgery. Chemotherapy uses drugs to try to kill off cancerous cells. Radiation therapy uses radiation to try to kill off cancerous cells although this is extremely difficult in the case of pericardial mesothelioma because too much radiation can badly damage the heart.

Dual therapy is a combination of both chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Surgery comes in two different types, aggressive surgery and palliative procedures. Aggressive surgery is only used on the strongest of patients such as young and healthy men and consists of removing a large portion of the cancer and attempts to gain control over the cancer. Palliative procedures are a more passive way of dealing with pericardial mesothelioma and just attempts to relieve the patient of the symptoms.

Research is being done into pericardial mesothelioma in research stations all over the USA and many pharmaceutical companies are also attempting to find new drugs for chemotherapy. So far, much research has been unsuccessful.

Mesothelioma Therapy - What Are the Options?

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that affects the membranes surrounding the internal organs of humans. When not detected until it has progressed to a late stage, it is often difficult, if not impossible to control. Adding to the particular danger of this cancer is that the symptoms are very general and non-specific. Because of this, it is often not diagnosed early enough. Exposure to asbestos is the leading cause of mesothelioma, documented in nearly all cases.

Because of its aggressive spread, you should contact your doctor as soon as you begin to suspect mesothelioma, especially if you have been exposed to asbestos at some point. You can first expect a screening from your doctor, which can include a variety of tests like X-Rays or CT scans. If these preliminary tests show any sign of mesothelioma, you can expect a long series of additional tests to rule out any other diseases.

The only definitive test for mesothelioma is a moderately invasive procedure called a biopsy. If your previous screenings come back positive, a small sample of tissue will be removed from the affected area and examined by a specialist. There are many different types and techniques of biopsy at your doctor's disposal, and he/she will select the right one depending on where the cancerous growth is located. Depending on which stage your cancer has advanced to, your Mesothelioma therapy options may be many. Mesothelioma can be classified as being in one of four stages of development.

Stage I is the earliest and very localized. If found at this stage, the prognosis can be quite good. Therapy options at this point can include surgical removal of the tumor, chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Clinical trials may also be used on a limited basis to determine the usefulness of new cancer fighting compounds.

Stage II refers to mesothelioma that has spread to other areas near the tumor. Once the cancer begins to spread, the prognosis rapidly deteriorates, however with the right treatment and mindset, hope for recovery still remains. Many of the same therapies for stage I are used for Stage II. Quite often with an individual who has stage I or stage II mesothelioma, the doctor will employ several therapies in conjunction with one another. While very effective, this can leave the patient in a very weakened state, and thus is not recommended for more advanced stages.

Stage III indicates the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. At this point, techniques such as surgery are limited in their effectiveness, simply because of the volume of cancer in the patient. If surgery is elected during stage III or IV, it is usually to increase the quality of life for the patient. Radiation and chemotherapy can still be used at this stage as a mesothelioma therapy, however their ability to control the cancer is diminished significantly.

Stage IV is the most advanced type and is applied to cases where the cancer has spread to parts of the body far removed from the tumor. Usually, when stage IV is reached, the mesothelioma spreads to the brain and the prognosis is very low. Mesothelioma therapy options at this point are usually used to improve the patient's quality of life, although there have been cases where a patient has been responsive enough to treatment that remission is achieved.

The number one asset you have in beating this cancer has little to do with choosing your mesothelioma therapy, but is catching your disease early. More than the different techniques used to combat the cancer, the early discovery of it can determine your prognosis.

Understanding Mesothelioma Information

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that grows within the Mesothelium. The Mesothelium is a membrane that surrounds certain organs of the body to provide protection. More specifically, Mesothelioma affects tissue lining the lungs, the heart and the abdominal cavity.

The Cause of Mesothelioma

There seems to be no disagreement that exposure to Asbestos is the most common and likely cause of Mesothelioma. This disease is usually considered to be a work related illness as most patients are exposed to Asbestos at the work place. It is very rare for patients to develop Mesothelioma as a result of Asbestos exposure outside of their job environments. Smoking by itself apparently does not cause Mesothelioma, however smoking after a Mesothelioma diagnosis is risky and counterproductive to treatment.

Typical Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma symptoms can show up at any time after asbestos exposure and up to 50 years thereafter.

These symptoms can include the following:

1. Shortness of breath
2. Coughing, including coughing blood
3. Chest Pain and abdomen pain as a result of fluid buildup
4. Weight loss which is abnormal
5. Notable changes voice pitch. Sometimes described as a husky voice
6. Swallowing difficulty, referred to as Dysphasia
7. Fever and chills
8. Low red blood cell count or Anemia
9. Obstruction in the bowel and constipation
10. Difficulty sleeping
11. Loss of appetite

Mesothelioma symptoms are sometimes mistaken for different medical conditions. This is due to the fact that they often resemble symptoms related to cardiovascular disease, allergies, pneumonia, asthma and other health afflictions.

Available Mesothelioma treatment options

Patients should discuss the available treatment options with their physician and/or oncologist. Most of the time, Mesothelioma treatment will include one of the following categories: Chemotherapy, Surgery and Radiation Therapy. Of course, the stage of the cancer and location will ultimately determine what treatment options are best for each individual patient.

Patients should also consider enrollment in clinical trials. Available clinical trials are usually listed at well-know cancer hospitals and research centers throughout the world. Doctors can assist their patients in finding relevant clinical trials and will be able to provide additional Mesothelioma information. Patients who have Internet access should utilize search engines to learn as much about their disease as possible.

Understanding the Mesothelioma Prognosis

There are many factors that directly affect the prognosis for those diagnosed with Mesothelioma. Some of these factors are as follows:

1. Has the disease spread and how far?

2. What type of Mesothelioma does the patient have?

3. Was the disease detected early or at a later stage?

4. How healthy is the patient in general?

The patients physicians will use the above factors and their experience to come up with a prognosis. However, it is important to note that no two patients are the same. Therefore, any prognosis given is not cut in stone.

Considerations for Mesothelioma Legal Action

Many people struggle with the decision of whether or not to seek legal action against the parties responsible for their Asbestos exposure. However, it is important to remember that these patients were usually exposed without their knowledge or consent. In addition, depending on a patient's health insurance coverage, Mesothelioma treatment can be very expensive. Patients should not feel bad about pursuing their legal rights.

Hopefully this article has provided useful Mesothelioma information. There is an excellent blog which dives into more detail about the disease, treatment options, finding a lawyer, etc...

Lung Mesothelioma Cancer

It is a of cancer whose occurrence is common as an aftermath of previous longterm exposure to asbestos. It can basically be sub categorized into pleural mesothelioma lung cancer and the peritoneal mesothelioma cancer. The kind under discussion includes the alignment of the cancer besides the affected lung. It falls into the category of the rarest kinds of cancer.

Common symptoms include wheezing and pain in the lungs and the overall chest wall. In spite of the above mentioned symptom this disease may not show itself for over two decades. The advanced stage might embody a tumor mass, preceding pneumothorax or a conceivable lung collapse. Although its circulation to the remaining body is unusual but not impossible. The pleural tumor presents itself on the face of the affected lung.

Its diagnosis is ordinarily an arduous task due to the similarity of symptoms that are mutual with several other diseases. The diagnosis procedure initiates with the review of the individual's medical history. A chest X-ray or CT scan follows. If any unusual activity is noticed a biopsy and a microscopic examination ensues.

If its presence is ascertained, subjection to chemotherapy and the radiation therapy is unavoidable. Several a times' surgery is also sought.

The procedure of chemotherapy encompasses regular use of medicines for targeting the cancerous cells and for additional help against putting up a strong fight against the disease; the surgery aims at their complete elimination whereas the radiation employs the use of the high-energy rays for terminating the tarrying killer cells in the body. The Intra operative photodynamic therapy is the new treatment method on the block that involves treatment via medicines and employs the use of a powerful light for dispatching the cancer cells. The happenings of a recovery are heavily reliant not only on the size of the cancer but also on the individual's response to the specific treatment.

Lung Cancer, Mesothelioma and Asbestos

Commonly, because lung cancer symptoms do not manifest in the early stage of the disease, treating it will be a big problem especially when detection happens when cancer metastases or secondary cancer cells already developed in the other organs of the body. Much research work has been dedicated to find out the first symptoms of lung cancer. Extensive research works conducted at Mesothelioma research clinics have uncovered some symptoms of lung cancer closely linked with the disease.

The main three symptoms to lung cancer that should not be ignored are shortness of breath, pain when breathing or coughing, and existence of a persistent cough, especially if it is accompanied by expectoration of sputum streaked with blood. Additionally, loss of appetite, fatigue, unusual losses of weight are three symptoms, which are indicative of lung cancer. The website further deals with the symptoms that can indicate and help identify the formulation of the preliminary stages of the disease (though difficult to be detected) so that adequate measures can be taken at the earliest possible opportunity.

Stage IV with extensive lymph node involvement or cancer that has spread to other organs, hen treated with chemotherapy and palliative care to reduce symptoms and increase comfort has a one-year survival rate.

Erionite fibers were found in biopsies of lungs of the mesothelioma cancer afflicted people. The third type of mesothelioma is called biphasic, it is a combination of the other two types and consists of 20-35% of all cases. In fact, Mesothelioma research news states that the period of the onset of Mesothelioma cancer could be from 10 to 60 years from the time of exposure to asbestos.

It is said that mesothelioma is linked to lung cancer and it is a good idea to get the help that is deserved when someone feels like they have been diagnosed because of the work that they did for a living. The term mesothelioma is used to describe a cancer tumor, which involves the mesothelial cells of an organ; this is usually the lungs, heart, or the abdominal organs. Mesothelioma cancer is caused by exposure to carcinogens such as asbestos.

Most cancers are caused by external stimuli and mesothelioma is no different.

Exposure

The time between exposure and development of cancer ranges from 15 to 30 years. Your risk increases by 30 percent from daily exposure to second-hand smoke. Second-hand smoke: Exposure to second-hand smoke has been shown to be a definite risk factor.

Although rarely discussed, exposure to toxic fumes in the workplace or environmental toxins in the air contribute to a significant number of deaths from lung cancer. For example, occupational exposure to diesel motor emissions, asbestos, and paint was found to be significantly correlated with an increased risk of lung cancer. Although changes in the lung begin almost immediately upon exposure to carcinogens, lung cancer takes years to develop.

Mesothelioma is a rare but deadly type of cancer usually caused by exposure to asbestos or asbestos-containing products. People who get lung cancer from asbestos exposure usually get it from work or from living in an older home. Factors that may protect people from lung cancer are not smoking, avoiding second hand smoke, a diet rich in fresh vegetables and fruit, and limiting exposure to potential carcinogens in the environment such as radon.

Asbestos

Imagine a building with asbestos insulation torn apart and exposing all that insulation, well now you can see the problem. Lung Cancer is affiliated with Asbestos Exposure.

People working in industries which involve extensive use of asbestos and other chemical substances/fumes are also at a greater risk of lung cancer. There are no reported cases of mesothelioma in people who were not exposed to asbestos either in the workplace or through their environment. Because asbestos related diseases take decades to form, early detection is critical for proper treatment.

However, exposure to asbestos presents an added urgency for routine appointments.

Mesothelioma Symptoms: What You Should Know

Any disease eventually shows symptoms. Most disorders of the internal system are clearly visible and this rings a bell. Mesothelioma has its own symptoms, but they tend to appear after much damage is done, and the disease does not have many specific symptoms. Mesothelioma is a cancerous tumor occurring in the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, often associated with exposure to asbestos dust.

An individual with mesothelioma cancer usually develops symptoms such as exertion dyspnea (difficulty with breathing) and decreased physical exercise tolerance. The insidious onset and difficulty in breathing are considered as the most usual presenting symptoms. The cancer, which slowly encases the lung tissue and invades the chest wall, produces pleural effusion (pleural fluid - or fluid in the pleural or lung cavity) in about seventy five percent of victims.

When the volume of fluid increases few changes like shortness of breath and sometimes pain ranging from mild to stabbing can occur. In few cases, the person may experience dry cough. Normally, when the doctor listens to the patient's chest with a stethoscope, normal breath sounds are muted and tapping on the chest will reveal dull rather than hollow sounds.

Symptoms or signs of airway disease include coughing, phlegm, and wheezing and are not common, but can occur in heavy smokers who have associated habitual bronchial inflammation. The chest x-ray depicts diffusely distributed, tiny irregular or linear opaqueness (non-transparencies), usually most noticeable in the lower lung zones.

In these cases, only minimal x-ray changes are visible and are easily mistaken for other conditions. Parenchyma is the tissue characteristic of a body organ and it can be seen by using diffusing method or localized pleural thickening. The illness advances around 1 to 5 years in about 5% to 12% of patients whose exposure has ended. As a result, a marked deterioration in oxygenation happens in lungs along with respiratory failure.

Many of these symptoms occur only at the advanced stages of the disease. The symptoms that are visible are very common ailments, like colds, cough, and difficulty in breathing. The onset of these minimal symptoms also hampers the treatment options, and in turn the affected one's lifetime.

Is There A Mesothelioma Cure?

Let's see if we can determine whether or not there is a mesothelioma cure. In this day and age it can seem absurd that there are no cures for cancer let alone a mesothelioma cure. Mesothelioma is a cancer, and as such, there is no true "cure" for it yet. However, if the disease is caught early, various treatment options can not only extend a patient's life, but also their quality of life. While the traditional survival rate for those diagnosed with mesothelioma is often set at eight to 12 months, more recently, a five year survival rate of some has increased substantially. This goes to show that treatment and drugs to battle mesothelioma cancer has increased and improved dramatically in the last few years. This may be due to the fact that more is known about mesothelioma cancer now than it ever was before.

However, there is still much to be understood about this aggressive disease. While the common diagnosis for mesothelioma is that it is indeed a form of cancer, not all researchers are in agreement. So as of yet there are no mesothelioma cure that has been developed; however there are things that people can do to ease any symptoms that they have. Your doctor or health professional will be able to help ease the symptoms and make the last few years or months a lot easier.

Some people think that mesothelioma cancer is a viral infection that has turned malignant. Thus, their prognosis is that the asbestos fibers which cause the disease could possibly activate an already present common virus infection, and eventually cause a variety of clinical conditions for the patient. While many of these clinical conditions may appear to not be harmful, in benign pleural effusions researchers don't typically find what is known as a pleural cavity that is then full of asbestos needles. Consequently, researchers either aren't culturing for the right agent, or they need more time to conduct broader research about the true nature of Mesothelioma.

Finally, here are some known medical facts that are not particularly common about Mesothelioma cancer:

o It is extremely rare for the Serosal membranes to be malignant other than with Mesothelioma cancer.

o It is not asbestos dependent.

o It is not smoking related.

o It only really happens when there is evidence of pleurisy.

o The latency period is longer than any other known malignancy.

While these facts contain specific, medical, terminology which some may be unfamiliar with, it is important to present the terminology as it known; scientifically. While the personal diagnosis, or that of a loved one, with mesothelioma can already seem like a devastating occurrence, it is important for people to educate themselves more specifically about such terms. This will assist both the patient, and their loved ones, to better understand the disease they are battling, and to more effectively communicate with their physicians regarding mesothelioma.

Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma

In this four-minute video, Dr. H. Richard Alexander, professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and surgical oncologist at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center, discusses the difficulty of developing a successful standardized treatment for a rare disease known as malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. Dr. Alexander talks about ongoing research to improve available treatment options for this condition, including his team's discovery of special proteins that appear to predict the growth of tumors associated with this illness and how developing targeted therapies for these proteins could affect the treatment of other known cancers.
